    Damage detection on the Z24 bridge by a spectral-based dynamic identification technique

    The paper tackles the dynamic identification and the damage detection carried out by a spectral-based method on the well-known Z24 bridge, a three-span pre-stressed concrete bridge located in Switzerland. Before being destroyed, the bridge was progressively damaged and tested in the framework of the Brite Euram project SIMCES. Starting from this benchmark, the presented spectral-based identification technique is validated and the usefulness of this method as a non-destructive tool able to catch the dynamic behavior of a structure and locate the damage is widely discussed. Firstly, a FE model of the bridge was built and calibrated in order to analyze its response to different excitation types (free vibration, triangular pulse, swept sine, shaker and random vibrations) and several damage scenarios. Secondly, aiming at identifying both the modal parameters and the damage of the bridge, the spectral-based method is applied making use of the power spectral matrix decomposition.     Wireless-based identification and model updating of a skewed highway bridge for structural health monitoring

    Vibration-based monitoring was performed on a short-span skewed highway bridge on the basis of wireless measurements. By means of operational modal analysis, highly accurate modal results (frequencies and mode shapes) were extracted by using a self-developed wireless acquisition system, for which the performance was verified in the field. In order to reproduce the experimental modal characteristics, a refined finite element model was manually tuned to reduce the idealization errors and then updated with the sensitivity method to reduce the parametric errors. It was found that to build a reliable Finite element (FE) model for application in structural health monitoring, the effects of superelevation and boundary conditions of a skewed bridge should be taken into account carefully

    Experimental characterisation of dynamic properties of an all-FRP truss bridge

The final version is available from the publisher via the DOI in this recordFibre Reinforced Polymers (FRPs) have increasingly been utilised for construction of pedestrian bridges due to high strength- and stiffness-to-weight ratios, low maintenance costs and quick installation. Their relatively low mass and stiffness make these bridges potentially susceptible to vibration serviceability problems, which increasingly govern the design. Currently, the wider application of FRPs in civil engineering is hindered by the lack of experimental insight in dynamic performance of as-built structures. This paper presents an experimental investigation on a 25, m long glass-FRP truss footbridge in Italy. Ambient vibration tests were conducted to identify the dynamic properties. The peak-picking method and stochastic subspace identification approach were employed for modal parameter identification. The two methods produced very consistent results. Eight vibration modes were identified in the frequency range up to 10, Hz. Two lateral flexural vibration modes having natural frequencies of 5.8 and 9.6, Hz were identified, as well as two vertical flexural modes (at 7.5 and 8.1, Hz) and four torsional modes (at 2.1, 2.7, 4.8 and 9.3, Hz).     Bulk Mediated Surface Diffusion: Non Markovian Desorption with Finite First Moment

    Here we address a fundamental issue in surface physics: the dynamics of adsorbed molecules. We study this problem when the particle's desorption is characterized by a non Markovian process, while the particle's adsorption and its motion in the bulk are governed by a Markovian dynamics. We study the diffusion of particles in a semi-infinite cubic lattice, and focus on the effective diffusion process at the interface z=1z = 1. We calculate analytically the conditional probability to find the particle on the z=1z=1 plane as well as the surface dispersion as functions of time.     Frequency-domain subspace identification of nonlinear mechanical systems - Application to a solar array structure

    The present paper addresses the experimental identification of a simplified realisation of a solar array structure in folded configuration. To this end, a nonlinear subspace identification technique formulated in the frequency domain, referred to as the FNSI method, is exploited. The frequency response functions of the underlying linear structure and the nonlinear coefficients are estimated by this approach. Nonlinearity is caused by impacts between adjacent panels and friction and gaps appearing in their clamping interfaces. This application is challenging for several reasons, which include high modal density and the complicated nature of the involved nonlinear mechanisms

    Dynamics of viscoelastic membranes

    We determine both the in-plane and out-of-plane dynamics of viscoelastic membranes separating two viscous fluids in order to understand microrheological studies of such membranes. We demonstrate the general viscoelastic signatures in the dynamics of shear, bending, and compression modes. We also find a screening of the otherwise two-dimensional character of the response to point forces due to the presence of solvent. Finally, we show that there is a linear, hydrodynamic coupling between the in-plane compression modes of the membrane and the out-of-plane bending modes in the case where the membrane separates two different fluids or environments

    Retinoblastoma outcome at a single institution in South Africa

    INTRODUCTION : Retinoblastoma (RB) is the most common eye cancer in children. Early detection is necessary for cure. OBJECTVE : To compare stage and outcome of children with RB treated at Kalafong Hospital, Pretoria, South Africa (SA), during two time periods (1993 - 2000 and 2001 - 2008, after outreach interventions in 2000 and introduction of compulsory community service for doctors in 1998). METHODS : Data collected included demography (age, gender, date of birth), stage and treatment received. The main outcome measure was disease-free survival and the study end-point was 60 months after diagnosis. RESULTS : There were 51 patients during the time period 1993 - 2000 (group 1) and 73 during 2001 - 2008 (group 2), with median ages of 32 and 26 months, respectively (marginally significantly younger in group 2; p=0.046). In group 1, the majority (57%) presented with advanced disease (stages III and IV), with a decline in this proportion in group 2 (40%) indicating a downward but not significant trend (p=0.075). Bilateral disease was diagnosed in 22% of patients in group 1 and 33% in group 2. Overall survival was 33% and 43% for groups 1 and 2, respectively. Excluding absconding patients, event-free survival was 50% in group 1, improving to 68% in group 2 (not statistically significant; p=0.18). Fewer patients needed radiotherapy during the second period (statistically significant; p=0.04), probably because of less advanced disease. CONCLUSION : Poor outcome is probably a result of late diagnosis.     Prospects for the Improvement of Energy Performance in Agroindustry Using Phase Change Materials

    This work was partially supported by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, UIDB/00066/2020 (CTS – Center of Technology and Systems).The use of Phase Change Materials (PCMs), able to store latent heat, represents an opportunity to improve energy efficiency in the agroindustry by means of thermal energy storage. PCMs provide higher energy density then sensible heat storage mediums, thus paving the way to multiple applications, like supporting the integration of renewables or allowing for new storage architectures, decentralized and directly installed in the chain production equipment, creating e.g. the opportunity to recover and value low-grade operational heat sub-products. Such new and decentralized architecture, not currently applied in agroindustry, is proposed in this work. A chocolate tempering machine using an organic PCM is conceived and analyzed using ANSYS Fluent software for computational fluid dynamics simulations, comparing the main aspects in the storage capacity and discharging process with a conventional sensitive heat storage solution that uses water. PCMs allows improving the stored energy, keeping the chocolate in the working temperature after being tempered for more than four times longer than using only hot water. If the PCMs are charged by renewables, the self-consumption ratio can be improved while providing energy flexibility to the user.authorsversionpublishe

    The utility of metabolic parameters on baseline F-18 FDG PET/CT in predicting treatment response and survival in paediatric and adolescent Hodgkin lymphoma

    Lymphoma is the third most common paediatric cancer. Early detection of high-risk patients is necessary to anticipate those who require intensive therapy and follow-up. Current literature shows that residual tumor avidity on PET (Positron Emission Tomography) following chemotherapy corresponds with decreased survival. However, the value of metabolic parameters has not been adequately investigated. In this retrospective study, we aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of metabolic and other parameters in paediatric and adolescent Hodgkin lymphoma. We recorded tMTV (total Metabolic Tumor Volume), TLG (Total Lesion Glycolysis), and SUVmax (maximum Standard Uptake Value) on baseline PET, as well the presence of bone marrow or visceral involvement. HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) status and baseline biochemistry from clinical records were noted. All patients received stage-specific standard of care therapy. Response assessment on end-of-treatment PET was evaluated according to the Deauville criteria. We found that bone marrow involvement (p = 0.028), effusion (p < 0.001), and treatment response (p < 0.001) on baseline PET, as well as HIV status (p = 0.036) and baseline haemoglobin (p = 0.039), were significantly related to progression-free survival (PFS), whereas only effusion (p = 0.017) and treatment response (p = 0.050) were predictive of overall survival (OS). Only baseline tMTV predicted treatment response (p = 0.017).     Nosocomial outbreak of hepatitis B virus infection in a pediatric hematology and oncology unit in South Africa : epidemiological investigation and measures to prevent further transmission

    BACKGROUND : Hospital-acquired hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has been well described and continues to occur worldwide. Recent nosocomial outbreaks have been linked to unsafe injection practices, use of multi-dose vials, and poor staff compliance with standard precautions. This report describes a nosocomial outbreak that occurred in a paediatric haematology and oncology unit of a large academic hospital, the epidemiological investigation of the outbreak, and preventive measures implemented to limit further in-hospital transmission. METHODS :Outbreak investigation including contact tracing and HBV screening were initiallycarried out on all patients seen by the unit during the same period as the first three cases. Routine screening for the entire patient population of the unit was initiated in February 2013 when it was realised that numerous patients may have been exposed. RESULTS : Forty-nine cases of HBV infection were confirmed in 408 patients tested between July 2011 and October 2013. Phylogenetic analysis of the HBV preC/C gene nucleotide sequences revealed that all tested outbreak strains clustered together. Most (67%) patients were HBeAg positive. The cause of transmission could not be established. Preventive measures targeted three proposed routes. HBV screening and vaccination protocols were started in the unit. CONCLUSIONS : The high number of HBeAg positive patients, together with suspected lapses in infection prevention and control measures, are believed to have played a major role in the transmission. Measures implemented to prevent further in-hospital transmission were successful.
